Fort Gibson Thru The Years

Fort Gibson over the years has produced both outstanding military relics and rare coins. Detecting was much better in the days before “No Till” farming came in to being. Before, each new planting season would bring deep turn plowing, 2 to 3 feet. After disking and getting 3 to 5 inches of rain on a field, to get the soil compacted and conductive again, it would be like it was a new site. Every year the deep plowing would turn up more goodies. Good finds can still be made, but not near as frequently as in the “Good Ol’ Days.”

Here are a couple of maps showing Cantonment Gibson Reservation circa 1820’s and Fort Gibson Reservation in July of 1840.
